Do this by picking the battles you can win. In other words, don’t take on mammoth projects like replacing whole windows, siding or insulation yourself unless you really know what you’re doing and you can get it done quickly and correctly the first time. After all, that’s what there are professional contractors for. They get paid well because they’re good at what they do. Let them do their job.

While a new window can save hundreds of heating dollars over the years, installed wrong or in a rush they can leak just as badly as older cracked windows and have to be replaced in a couple years anyways. So, quite possibly you threw money away. And just when you thought you were saving a few bucks. It’s not worth it in the end for most people.

So what part do you play in minimizing your home’s heat loss problem? Answer – a huge, even critical role.

Simple things, like sealing leaky parts of windows, insulating switches, and doing some minor caulking are activities within anyone’s reach. They require very little skill, very little time, and more importantly to most people very little money.

That’s what we’ll be focusing on for the most part in these articles. Little things we all can do that help the bottom line when it comes to the heating and other bills.
