If there’s one thing I’ve learned doing home energy audits, repairs, and consultations its this: you always need to have the right tools for the job. Its true in any profession, any contracting gig, or even any job. You need the tools.  Tools help you develop your skills. The two, I’m convinced, go hand in hand.

So, do you have a home energy toolbox? It doesn’t have to be an actual toolbox, it could be a bag, cardboard box, or just an abstract idea and collection of tools.

Every homeowner needs an energy toolbox. And every person doing an energy audit or even just examining their energy usage needs one too!

Here’s what I have in my toolbox:

• Gloves. Essential and reliable, my gloves insulate and protect my hands.
• Safety goggles. I’ve grown accustomed to having my eyes, and I’d like to keep them around.
• Electrical Tape. Great for an emergency repair or just as a quick adhesive
• Flashlight. I think we all know why we need one in this kit
• Screwdriver set. Philips, flat head, hex keys. All are essential.
• Pliers (needlenose, regular, vice grips)
• Adjustable wrenches (& pipe wrench)
• Pipe tape (just in case)
• Multimeter. I’m absolutely lost on HVAC jobs without it. A good multimeter will run you at least $100 but is well worth it. Mine is an Extech multi function multimeter. It’s absolutely invaluable.
• IR Thermometer / temperature probes
• Electrical monitor
• Journal. This is for writing my findings and thoughts while on jobs.

Of course, not every energy job demands these tools. And some jobs may require others. This is a starting point to get you thinking about the incredible depth of energy repairs and inspection, and the tools that you really should have to do the job right the first time.
