We humans have been leaving our mark on this planet for a long time now, and as consumers it is not always a positive one. In an age full of tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina, economic strain prompts us to become more interested in the health of the earth as well as saving money. This is why green energy sources deserve our attention. Many of us are unaware of the great number of energy-saving devices. Some can actually be made at home inexpensively, are pollution-free and operate on resources of essentially unlimited availability such as wind, water and sunlight.
In a recent news report, Brad Pitt was interviewed concerning housing that he helped finance in New Orleans. These houses were designed to be affordable and energy efficient. These homes were so efficient, power bills were as low as $8 per month (just for the service charge). Some higher-end homes even sold energy back to the power companies! (See Pitt’s website for more information).
The truth is that our country is too dependent on fossil fuels and international trade for our energy. It is estimated that only 7% of energy consumed is from renewable sources. The government claims that green energy on a large scale is too expensive to implement. However, how expensive is an oil spill? Where are the long-term costs and consequences? At any rate, it is vital that we do not wait for our government to finally realize the cost of squandering valuable limited resources where green energy could be used instead. Change can start right in our own homes by putting green energy to use ourselves!
